Stand Up Paddle
What’s SUP
Stand Up Paddle surfing or SUP surfing as it is more commonly
known, involves standing upright on a large surfboard and paddling with a long
shafted paddle. Stand up paddling is generally used for surfing waves and
distance paddling.
Benefits
SUP Surfing is great for both exercise and fun. It's an incredibly social activity
and appeals to both sexes. It provides an amazing core workout, strengthens the
upper body and legs and improves balance. It is also excellent for a range of
injury rehabilitation, redeveloping the body's preconception at an amazing
rate.
The nature of the sport allows the individual to push their limits as far as they
want. SUP is able to be done in all conditions, from flat waterways through to
tackling big outer reefs and everything in between.
The boundaries of this sport are constantly being redefined as a result of evolving
modern equipment that utilizes new materials and construction techniques.
Combine this with open minded individuals and it's easy to see why the sports
performance levels are continually reaching new heights.
SUP surfing adds a whole new dimension to your surfing experience. It allows you to
catch waves earlier and faster, gives you the ability to surf multiple breaks in
a session, and turns waves that were once not surfed due to being considered
average into a fun uncrowded surf spot. Add to this the extensive physical
benefits gained from SUP and you have an exceptional sport.
When surfing on a wave the paddle is used to assist in turning, offering great
leverage when it comes to maneuvering the SUP boards, allowing critical turns to
be performed. SUP boards can be surfed with old style malibu moves, contemporary
shortboard style maneuvers or your own interpretation.
Another aspect of the sport is distance paddling. SUP boards are
being used for downwind coastal runs and channel crossings (including the
Quicksilver Molokai to Oahu paddle race) by SUP enthusiasts for their exercise
and endurance value or when surf conditions are unfavorable. Distance paddle
races are now popping up all around the world.
Roots
The sport of Stand Up Paddle (SUP) surfing is an old pastime which dates back to the
original Waikiki beachboys. With the emergence of lighter, shorter boards in the
60's the sport virtually disappeared.
SUP surfing has experienced a modern renaissance. This began in Hawaii and has now
exploded around the globe. The fun and fitness benefits of SUP has been
recognized from the world’s surfing elite right through to
beginners.
